The Fox and the Star

written and illustrated by Coralie Bickford-Smith

Particular Books/Penguin Australia 64 pp paperback $19.99 hardback $35.00 ISBN 978-1-846-14850-7

The Fox and the Star is an outstanding book,  to be enjoyed by all ages and one to keep and treasure forever. It was first published in  2011 and I am reviewing it here now in case you missed it. Fox, timid and alone, lives in a deep dense forest. For as long as he could remember he was guided through the forest by the cool calm light of Star. All of his happiness is bound to the flickering light of this one friend, the star. When it disappears Fox has to face the forest  alone and learn to live there without its guiding light. It is a moving story of love, loss and learning to accept change. It is an exquisite parable of growing up in a world full of uncertainties, disinterest,  and ignorance yet somehow managing to retain hope and love.

The book is a masterpiece of colour and design. Each page is intricate, exquisite and a delight for the eye.  Bickford-Smith uses colour and line in strong yet delicate, bold but subtle ways. Fox is an endearing creation, the forest is magnificent in its mystery and splendour and the creatures therein are many and varied. I could happily frame any page and put it on my walls. The book is available in paperback  and  hardback. As this is one to keep forever I recommend the hardback as the quality of the paper is so much better, which makes the artwork more vibrant and the book lasts so much longer.

  1. An interesting discussion is price comment. I believe that you need to write more on this subject, it might not be a taboo subject however usually people are not enough to talk on such topics. To the next. Cheers
